Sport is a relevant factor in all universities, as it is the best way to work with and get to know your body. Moreover, it is another way to make your brain relax and work in an effective way.


Volda University College gym offers some sports such as handball, volleyball, football, among others which have to be paid for and everyone has access to them. But there are some activities which were created with the initiative of students. This is the case for Pavla Michálková: a student who teaches Yoga, Taichi, Chan-Shaolin and Dju-Su Kung-Fu. She shares her experiences in these Asian sports every Monday at 18:00 and every Thursday at 16:30 in a part of the gym in Idrettsbygget. Some students – mostly internationals – gather here to partake in these sports which improve well-being.


The origin of this initiative

This course is for free and it arised a long time ago when Pavla began teaching her closest family members and friends. This sparked the interest of some students and she kept sharing her knowledge with more people. She even created a group on Facebook to be in touch with people who were interested in learning Yoga and Tai-chi. Her wish is to contribute to something new and something she loves. She has received help from Volda University College to get more space as the number of students increases.


What this course consists of

She uses a variety of techniques in her lessons. Lessons on Mondays are more active because they are just 45 minutes.

– For the first part we focus on breathing and exercises to warm up the body with different moves. Then comes the self-defense part and work in pairs. I teach them how to fall on a floor, stable positions in ‘garde’, and the most important steps for beginners, explains Pavla.

On the other hand, lessons on Thursdays are more long-lasting, an hour and a half, so these ones are more relaxing.

– The most we are focusing on is Yoga. I am trying to relax and wake up the muscles we usually don’t need during the day or to relax the muscles which we use so much, the circle movements for the joints. After the lesson they should feel a difference and to breathe and move a bit better, Pavla further explains.


This kind of sport helps to balance your body and how you feel, in other words. It doesn’t make you feel exhausted but you are working out your muscles and your breathing improves even though you are doing small and easy movements. If someone is used to practicing Yoga and Tai-Chi, they feel stronger and more flexible, without the need of weightlifting or other hard movements and stretches.


Motivation for teaching

To Pavla, the main motivation for doing this activity is the feedback of students and to do something she enjoys doing. Her success with these courses made her to want keep teaching.

– I am glad to see the students happier and more relaxed. These courses are for free for many reasons: one of them is that people don’t look for money and I want to show them that this simple sharing of my knowledge can give more to many people. It is important to live and be happy and do what I want. If I can help a little bit, I will do it, concludes Pavla.


As you can see, sports do not only improve your health, but they help you to know people, show them what you like and what you can do. Of course it also creates friendships over time. So, if you have not enrolled in any sport yet because you don’t have enough money to pay for some sports or you don’t like hard sports, the Yoga and Tai-chi course could be the alternative for you!
